Cool Places and Products

Here are some places I’ve stayed and the products I’ve used. Let me tell you what I like and dislike about them.

RV PARKS & RESORTS

Sunset Isle RV Park and Motel, 11850 SR 24, Cedar Key, FL 32625

This was the first place I took my RV, mainly because it’s a short, scenic, two-and-a-half-hour drive from my home in Altamonte Springs. I was also able to reserve a space right next to the water. Sunset Isle is considered a small RV park, but it has full hookups (power, water, and sewer) and a great view of Cedar Key Bay, which is known for its sunsets.

My main objection is their website. It’s out of date and inaccurate. When I mentioned to management that they needed a new website, I was told they had no way to update it.  Their rates aren’t posted anywhere either. They are a Good Sam Club member but they said the discount was already in their rate. 

While I enjoyed my stay, I had issues with slow wifi and lack of a good cell signal. Not a good situation for someone who still works full-time. One reason the wifi was so bad is because the park doesn’t protect the service with a password, which affects the bandwidth with so many non-guests using it.  The cable didn’t work either, although John, the manager, did lend me some coax and attempt to get it working for me. 

While the management is adamant about keeping your dog on a leash and picking up after your pets, I found a huge pile of poop right in front of my rig the first morning. I told management about it, but no one ever came to clean it up.

The noseeums were a problem at dusk, driving everyone into their rig, or down the road to the Tiki Bar when it would have been nice to sit outside and enjoy the sunset.  I doubt that I will go back to this RV park, although many other campers told me they loved it.

El Mar R.V. Resort, 6700 Maloney Ave, Key West, FL 33040

The best part about the El Mar R.V. Resort is it’s right on the water and there are only 11 sites with full hookups. Another great asset is the manager. I wish I could remember her name. She was so sweet and nice to me; even gave me a ride to the airport so I could get a rental car.

If you want to stay at El Mar, you have to book a site for at least five nights. The only downside is they don’t have a bathhouse or a swimming pool.

RESTAURANTS AND BARS

Steamers Clam Bar & Grill, 420 Dock St., Cedar Key, FL 32625

I loved this restaurant! Can’t say it enough. The food, the view of the Gulf (stunning), and the service were excellent. Almost every day I rode my bike from the RV park to Steamers Clam Bar & Grill in downtown Cedar Key, which was about one mile away. I sat at the bar, ordered a grouper sandwich, my comfort food, and read my book. I also had the seafood pasta on another day.  It was all delicious and a fun place to go.

The Tiki Bar at Lowkey Hideaway, 12050 SR 24, Cedar Key, FL 32625

This is the best place in Cedar Key to have a cocktail and watch the sunset. The Tiki Bar is also located a few doors down from Cedar Key RV Resort, so I could walk, which is always a good thing when you’re about to imbibe. The drink prices were reasonable and the bartenders were generous with their pours. On Friday nights they have live music and it’s a fun time for all.

PRODUCTS

Roku

I love all of the Roku streaming products and I’ve been using them for many years. They have allowed me to cut the cord and save a lot of money. The Roku Streaming Stick+ saved my life at the Cedar Key RV resort. The resort’s wifi was really slow, so I couldn’t get all of the channels to stream (HBO Now and Hulu), but Netflix and Amazon Prime came in OK.
